Matthew just finished up his first session of guitar (10 classes). He was happy to play us "Jingle Bells". I think we may continue on to the next session, since he is enjoying it, and it is very beneficial to him.

A Busy Week...two Birthdays!
This past week has been very busy! Very filled with Birthdays! Very filled with school projects and parent teacher conferences. Very filled with Thanksgiving! Very filled, and very busy!
August had a Birthday Party at our house last Friday night. He had two friends over for three hours of playing, eating pizza and a Coldstone Ice cream Cake, watching movies and running around. It was the party he wanted and a great way to celebrate turning EIGHT!
August also had a big heritage project and presentation due on Tuesday. We chose to research the German portion of his heritage, since it is the one we seem to know the most about. Plus, his name was from that side of his heritage, and Schaal also comes from there. We made a clothespin doll, a map of the location and portion of his family tree, and prepared apple strudel for his classmates to sample. His presentation was on Tuesday, and the girls and I enjoyed sitting in for it, and hearing some of the other kids present as well. I feel he learned a lot from the project, and gained some public speaking experience.

On Monday Matthew chose three friends to take to Sky High, which is an indoor trampoline jump zone, followed by pizza and cake at Round Table. It was the perfect party to celebrate turning ELEVEN!!

Matthew at the "States Fair"
What a fun night we had lastnight! Well, Mike and August had to go to August's soccer game, but lastnight was the grand finale to a large project that the 5th graders have to do. Each student gets assigned a state, and Matthew wanted California, but it got snagged up before he could claim it, so he picked South Carolina, thinking that S.C. is where Aunt Jaime lives, so we have ties there. He was slightly bummed when I let him know that Aunt J is actually in North Carolina, but still very excited to do the project. Matthew and I had a great time researching and assembling the project, and we were even the first ones to turn it in. His teacher was highly impressed:-)
So, lastnight the school went all out to decorate outside the 5th grade portables (very nicely, I might add), and the kids were to bring a food that is eaten or tied in with their state. It was a large potluck, with lots of food. There were also many games with prizes, and various other activities, like one portable was playing the movie "State Fair" (or something like that). One room was full of board games. They had a cotton candy and popcorn machine. The idea was to make it like a fair. Well, I was highly impressed with our school! They sure have this event down, and work very hard to make it fun for not just the kids, but the families as well. And as for Matthew's teacher, I am so happy with her!! What a wonderful lady. She is so dedicated to our kids, and it just makes my heart warm and happy! Case in point: She sent an e-mail out a few weeks ago saying that she loves going to her students events, if they would like for her to go. She asks that we send the dates, and she will make the ones she can.....how cool is that!? She is so supportive. LOVE HER:-))
So, back to lastnight, we brought a Hoguenut torte and some brownies as back-up, and just because, and came into a schmorgesboarg of food...Matthew, the girls and I filtered through the line and piled onto our plates what we could, then Matthew lead us back to his classroom to sit and eat. There were many different places where you could eat, but he really wanted to sit in his classroom near his teacher:-) So we went in there and came into a very relaxed atmosphere where everyone was eating and chatting. Afterward, we went into the next portable where all the floats were set up, where we were able to vote on our favorite. I was biased and of course, voted for ours, but there were some AMAZING floats there...I had no idea how crazy people can get (how elaborate) with these projects. Very cool, and I loved that Matthew was so interested in seeing them... so much so that we ended up going back a second time at the end of the night to look at them again, when there were fewer people in the room.
The games were fun, eating was fun, and we were there the full two hours. Matthew had a great time, and so did we!

Beseball 2011-Redsox
This baseball season has been going great! Our weather causes many of the games to end up as "rescheduled games", but we have learned to roll with it, and it is working out just fine. Matthew's team is very competitive and really wants to win, but his coach is a very good one. This year, Matthew has pitched less, but our team has several pitchers for us to call on. He has turned into an excellent third base man!
I haven't been great about taking many pictures this season, partly because I am usually so consumed with the game (when I'm not tending to the girls), and part because many games or so cold all I can really do is try to get through sitting there for 2+ hours. Anyhow, over Easter weekend we had a day that was PERFECT for baseball. It was our first day the reached 70 degrees this year. It was so nice to be out in the beautiful day, watching Matthew and his team. This weekend he will be partaking in a baseball tournament from Friday through Sunday for sure, and into Monday if they win. We just hope the rain can subside enough to get all the games in!

Matthew at the Science Fair
The week before we left for Disneyland, Matthew's school had its science and art fair. Matthew's experiment was centered around whether playing motion video games is truly considered exercise, as determined by taking ones heart rate at rest and after playing, and using an equation that takes ones heart rate after exertion and seeing if it is raised enough from its resting rate to be exercise. The result? YES, it is exercise! We used the kinect system, so I'm not sure how the wii compares, but this was a great experiment for all of us!!

SES wins $10,000 prize from NFL
This was so awesome! Our school entered a contest the NFL was having and WON. Not only did we win $10,000 for P.E. equipment and such, but Matthew was one of the 30 kids selected to have a one hour power hour with John Carlson of the Seattle Seahawks. He appears briefly near the end of the clip I provided when the kids are high-fiving John. I wasn't there so have no pics. but this clip ran on KOMO 4, and I thought our blog followers would enjoy it.

The Walk A Thon
The kids new school is big on the walk a thon as a form of fundraiser. In fact, it is their ONLY fundraiser of the school year. The teachers talk a lot with the kids about it, and they make it a fun team effort. The teachers all walk or run as well, and Matthew's teacher ran the entire time! August's teacher walked with several kids from her class around her at all times. Matthew had trained for nearly two weeks for this event, and was very excited for it. His class them was the Roubecek Rockin' Runners, and August's team was the Heinz' Heros (Superheros). In all, Matthew ran 25 laps, which equaled FIVE miles, and August walked 17 laps. Way to go, boys!! I loved being there to cheer you on, and could really feel the team spirit in the air!
I am beyond impressed with this new school and my boys teachers. This school works hard to keep parents involved, keeps a steady amount of homework coming in, keeps on top of parent signatures to assure parents are doing their part, has a well rounded program, and the kids are growing in leaps and bounds on the educational level. Yeah!!

Matthew's Baseball Championship Game
The reward for such a great season and game, and just because....Mike and Matthew went to the Mariners vs Cubs game at Safeco Field in Seattle the week following Matthew's big win. Mike splurged and bought these great seats. Matthew had such a good time, he couldn't stop talking about this game.

Hee-hee.Winner, Winner, WINNERS!!
Winner's of the Snoqualmie Valley Minors Champoinship Game. The team did awesome, and ended up winning in an extra inning (7th) with one of our players stealing home. It was an emotional game, and we were so proud of the Cubs. Matthew was the starting pitcher for this important game, and he was nervous, but focused, and did an amazing job.
